Who Are We?

Kerry-Anne Kitson

I’m Kerry-Anne and I set up Toucan in 2021 after a hugely successful period as a sole trader.

My early background (pre-family) was with the Metropolitan Police Service as a Senior Crime Analyst. I trained extensively in analytical and research skills before finding my preferred area of expertise with major crime. Working predominantly on murder cases and gang crime, attention to detail has always been one of my strongest skills.

Following the birth of my daughter in 2003 I took a career break but during this period had somehow to earn a small income to fund my shopping habits! As I was also a self defence trainer for the police, as well as a qualified aerobics instructor I added to this skillset and trained as a personal trainer and children’s fitness instructor and set up my own fitness business. All was great until a period of illness left me with no balance and no way to continue training.

It was shortly after this period that I became involved with assisting a friend set up a children’s drama and dance company. She was brilliant at what she did but the business skills were not her strong point. This led to a flourishing relationship where I managed all aspects of the business for her whilst she did the creative job. Strategy and finance were key, and my former analytical skills led us to grow this company from just a handful of children to over 150 children coming through the door every week.

During this period, we took up residency at a 500 seater, Grade II Listed theatre and I very quickly became involved with assisting the theatre make changes to it’s own business model as it was finding itself in difficulty. Again, with an analytical brain, a different approach to the business model and a bit of creativity we were able to turn the theatre back into profit within year one of the plan.

At this stage, I had a decision to make. Whether to stay as an employee with the theatre or to continue to do what I love most, helping business owners grow their businesses. This was a fairly easy decision.

Since early 2019 I have worked with several clients, in a variety of fields and have had some great successes with the companies, even during the difficult period of Covid-19.  The trouble is, I now can’t do it all on my own and so the need for my own expansion came about.
